Every Other: A Photo Journal

07/01/13 9:00AM - 6:00PM

Every Other: A Photo Journal Featuring Words and Photography by Scott Cavanah and Matt Buedel - Main Library

Matt Buedel and Scott Cavanah lived within spitting distance of each other for years, blissfully ignorant of the other’s slavish obsessions with premium root beer and photos that don’t suck. A mutual friend shattered that delicate balance in 2007 with a simple introduction, and Scott’s series-oriented ambitions met Matt’s scattershot photography head-on. Every Other is a product of that collision. Based loosely on photographer Craig Cutler’s CC52 project, the basic premise of the collaboration is a weekly assignment for each photographer, determined by the other, composed of a single word. That’s it. The interpretation in the image can be literal, sarcastic, fantastical; there are no boundaries. Within this outline, however, is a practical requirement for each photographer to escape routine. For Scott, who works in streaks and rarely publishes his images until a series is complete, the weekly deadline forces productivity in a foreign format. For Matt, who carries a camera at all times but lacks coherence between images, the concept represents a mandate to stick with a theme. This combination of strengths and weaknesses for each of them has unfolded every week for the last year. Every Other, 52 words, 52 images.
