Between Expectations: Underrepresented Students’ Academic and Cultural Struggles - Lakeview Branch

David Hansen will be giving a presentation on his experiences working with Native American students in a community college setting and discussing the connections to Starr Carter’s struggles in The Hate U Give. Having been an instructor for over a decade at Bay de Noc Community College in Upper Michigan, Hansen has seen the struggles that underrepresented students, in particular Native students, face when trying to succeed in what can be perceived as an institution perpetuating the dominant white culture. Between feeling ostracized by their predominantly white peers/instructors and simultaneously feeling pressured to remain on the reservations by their own family members due to history relating to Indian Schools, Native students, like Starr, can become trapped between two worlds. Hansen will share his experiences in the classroom, suggest resources from Native created sites, and discuss why a formal education can be far more difficult to complete than outsiders would imagine.
