Linguistic Identity and the Importance of Code-Switching in The Hate U Give

Claudia Sanchez will define the terms ‘linguistic identity’ and ‘code-switching’ and will explore these concepts in relation to the book The Hate U Give. Additionally, this talk will explore how understanding these concepts can prevent us from making assumptions of understanding the struggle that underrepresented minorities face on a daily basis. From an academic standpoint, Sanchez has taught the importance of understanding these terms in both General Linguistics courses at Illinois State University, and First-Year writing courses at both Illinois State University and Millikin University. Sanchez enjoys tackling these topics in the different settings in hopes that she can give African-American students a voice in the classroom when talking about social issues and help non-African-American students get an idea of the kind of struggles their peers had to navigate for most of their lives.
