The Government Printing Office Electronic Information Access Enhancement Act

The Government Printing Office as the federal agency responsible for the printing needs of the Congress and federal agencies has shifted from a predominately print format to an electronic form of access. In 1993 Congress passed The Government Printing Office Electronic Information Access Enhancement Act. This law required the Superintendent of Documents under the direction of the Public Printer to create a digital warehouse for storage of government publications for public access to federal information published in electronic format. Section 4101(a)2, explicitly directs the creation of "a system of online access to the Congressional Record, the Federal Register, and, as determined by the Superintendent of Documents, other appropriate publications distributed by the Superintendent of Documents."

You will find a sampling of just some of the publications available in electronic format here and in print at your Federal Depository Library. You will find cover images, a brief description, and links to the full-text versions. You may view a larger cover image of each document by clicking on the cover images.

By browsing this collection of electronic publications you will gain a sense of the vital, interesting, and pertinent publications provided for citizens by the federal government.

Violence in the Workplace

Violence in the workplace -- it happens, and when it does, it's frightening. How can we keep it from happening? How can angry people be managed so their fury doesn't explode unexpectedly? For that matter, how can workplaces be protected from acts of terrorism, like those that occurred on 9/11/01? In FBI Director Robert Mueller's words: "Workplace violence was put in a new context that day. Prior to 9/11, this type of violence was viewed as perpetrated by disgruntled employees, customers, or a domestic violence/stalking relationship that surfaces at a workplace. Since that time, America's workplaces have to be prepared not only to face the more traditional internal workplace threats, but now have to consider the external threat of terrorism."

Bullying is Not a Fact of Life

Every day in our schools (and communities) children are teased, threatened, and tormented by bullies. Bullying has been identified as a problem that creates a climate of fear, affecting the whole school. Those who fail to recognize and stop bullying behavior as it occurs actually promote violence. If we fail to stop the behavior, we send a message to the bully that "You have the right to hurt people," and a message to the victim that, "You are not worth protecting." This message needs to be changed and changed now.
